"Who would not want, after the screening [of documentary Soy Andina], to meet Nélida and Cynthia, to travel in Peru, to attend all possible fiestas in the Andes, and to meet Peruvians?" (from review of Soy Andina in Le Journal des Reflects #2)

**It is too late to register for this tour.  However, please get in touch with Doug if you are interested in hearing about possible future tours.**

We have heard the requests, and we have responded!  Join Nélida Silva, dancer and star of the documentary Soy Andina, on the first Soy Andina Peru Dance Tour in June 2009, in and around Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and at festivals of traditional dance and culture, including the Fiestas del Cusco, Inti Raymi, and the Festival of Indigenous Dances at Tinajani.

Witness the twirling skirts and smiling faces of dancers at the traditional festivals, and Inca royalty come to life at the spectacular Inti Raymi celebrations.  Seek out the colorful and unique foods of a local market, and the interplay of Inca and Colonial architecture in the city of Cusco.  Travel through vast Andean landscapes to visit Sacred Valley towns, and explore the historic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.  Venture to discover the fascinating history, diverse culture, spirited people, and of course the traditional dances of Peru.

ITINERARY

June 17:  Fly from Lima to Cusco (flight included).  Reception at Cusco airport, transfer to hotel, free day.  Hotel in Cusco.

June 18:  View local schoolchildren perform traditional dances, in the typical dress of various regions, at the Fiestas del Cusco in the Plaza de Armas. Explanation of dances and activities by Nélida.  Hotel in Cusco.

June 19:  Tour of the Sacred Valley, including the open-air artisan markets and the Inca ruins of Pisac, and the Inca fortress and historic town of Ollantaytambo.  All with English speaking guide.  Hotel in Ollantaytambo.

June 20:  Free morning in Ollantaytambo to explore the town, its Inca ruins, and handicraft market.  Ollantaytambo is perhaps the best surviving example of an Inca town.  It has been inhabited for over seven centuries, and many of its buildings contain original Inca stonework.  A possible special visit to a local Apu (mountain / spirit) with Cynthia Paniagua, if her schedule allows.  All with English speaking guide.  Hotel in Cusco.

June 21:  Tour the historic sights of Cusco including the Cathedral and Coricancha (the Inca temple to the Sun).  All with English speaking guide.  Hotel in Cusco.

June 22:  Witness local university students perform traditional dances wearing the trajes tipicos of various regions, at the Fiestas del Cusco in the Plaza de Armas.  Explanation of dances and activities by Nélida.  Hotel in Cusco.

June 23:  Free day in Cusco to explore the city and its museums, shops, and artisan markets, with numerous recommendations provided.  Option (not included in price) to attend Kusikay, Cynthia's theater performance, during one of the evenings in Cusco.  It is a performance with the goal, as she says, "to awaken a consciousness about our roots through the arts in these globalized days...to embrace both the cultural principles of our ancestors and our present modern realities."  Hotel in Cusco.

June 24:  View the spectacular Inti Raymi celebration, the Inca festival of the Sun.  Starting with the processions and greeting of the Sun at Coricancha, site of the most important Inca temple to the Sun, and continuing to the grand ceremony at Sacsayhuaman, the vast Inca fortress above the city.  Explanation of dances and activities by Nélida and English speaking guide.  Hotel in Cusco.

June 25:  Travel to Aquas Caliente by train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo, through the scenic landscape of the Urubamba River.  Hotel in Aquas Caliente.

June 26:  Ascend to Machu Picchu to experience the spectacular ruins.  Learn about the ancient city and its inhabitants on a guided tour, and spend time exploring.  All with English speaking guide.  Return by train in afternoon to Ollantaytambo or Cusco.  Transfer to hotel in Cusco.  **Please note:  Machu Picchu visit may occur on June 25 immediately after arrival at Aquas Calientes, based on return train ticket times and availability.  Hotel in Cusco.

June 27:  Travel south of Cusco to the remarkable Festival of Indigenous Dance at Tinajani, near Ayaviri.  Witness hundreds of dancers from all regions of Peru as well as Bolivia and Chile as they perform traditional dances, surrounded by thousands of spectators and the towering natural rock formations of Tinajani.  Explore the food stalls and taste local specialties including Kankachos.  Explanation of dances and activities by Nélida.  Hotel in Ayaviri or Cusco.

June 28:  Bid farewell to beautiful Cusco.  Transfer to Cusco airport.  Fly to Lima (flight included).  End of Tour.
